St. Andrew’s Day День Андрія (Калита) December 13th on the Julian Calendar
St. Andrew’s Day rituals revolve around the tradition of “kalyta biting” performed by youth. The kalyta is a round flat cake covered with honey and poppy seeds that is hung by a ribbon. Young men try to bite off the largest piece of kalyta possible in the hopes that who ever successfully does so will be blessed with a happy marriage.
